KANSAS RIDGE SCHOOL HOUSE BUILT IN 1902, THE OLDEST BUILDING IN THE PARK The Kansas Ridge School house was brought by the Historical Society, moved to the park and restored by past students and teachers of Rimbey Schools in 1966. It was the first official school, built before the town was given its present name. At that time Rimbey was known as Kansas Ridge, a name that was chosen by settlers in the area that came from Kansas, may of which were from the ‘Rimbey’ family. It is reported that the name had to be changed when the town applied for a post office as it was discovered that there was already a Kansas Ridge somewhere. The schoolhouse was used until 1924 when a much larger brick building was constructed. The building was sold to A.E. Drader who cut a hole in the front to accommodate the storage of a wooden threshing machine, which is now also on display at the Park. Restoration was quite an undertaking as the front of the building had to be rebuilt. Wooden school desks were acquired and the school was set up as it would have been in its day. BACK |
